Professor Dunning has been researching into the
economics of international direct investment and the multinational
enterprise since the 1950s. He has authored, co-authored, or edited
35 books on this subject and on industrial and regional economics.

Professor Dunning was Emeritus Professor of International Business
at the University of Reading, U.K., and State of New Jersey Professor
of International Business at Rutgers University, New Jersey, U.S.A.
In addition, he was Visiting Professor at several universities
in North America, Europe and Asia. He was also Chairman of the
Graduate Center of International Business at the University of
Reading. Professor Dunning was Senior Economic Adviser
to the Director of the Division on Transnational Corporations
and Investment of UNCTAD in Geneva, and Chairman of a London based
economic consultancy
Economists Advisory Group Ltd., which
specializes in research on international and regional economic
issues.
Professor Dunning received honorary doctorates
from the University of Uppsala in Sweden, the Autonomous University
of Madrid and the University of Antwerp. He was also honorary Professor
of International Business at the University of International Business
and Economics at Beijing. He was past President of the International
Trade and Finance Association, and of the Academy of International
Business. A Festschrift, edited by Peter Buckley and Mark Casson,
was published in his honor in 1992. Professor Dunning was Chairman
of the Board of Editorial Advisors of the UNCTAD journal
Transnational
Corporations, and served on several other editorial and advisory
boards.
Professor Dunning died on January 29, 2009.
