Stephen Lewis (1937- )
started his career as an elected politician and broadcaster.
He was Canada’s permanent representative to the UN
(1984-88) and was UNICEF’s deputy executive director
(1995-99). He was chair of the UN Committee which drafted
UNPAAERD, as the Secretary-General’s special advisor
on Africa, as chair of the first International Conference
on Climate Change, as UNICEF’s special representative
and its coordinator of the Graça Machel study on
the Impact of Armed Conflict on Children. He has
served as consultant to UNAIDS, UNIFEM, and the ECA. In
2001, he was appointed the Secretary-General’s special
envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa. He was born in Canada and
educated at the Universities of Toronto and British Columbia.
