Kofi Annan (1938- ) was the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. He was elected Secretary-General in 1996 and reelected in 2001. A career international civil servant, he joined the world organization in 1962 and has worked in various capacities, including as assistant secretary-general for human resources management, program planning, budget and finance, and as under-secretary-general for peacekeeping operations. He was born in Ghana and educated at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, Macalester College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States, and at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva.
